National Geographic visits Brazil: Video

The National Geographic channel’s team visited Brazil and has posted this video on the Net showing some of the most beautiful places in the South American country. The show and talk about the culture in Sao paulo, Rio de Janeiro, the Pantanal and the Amazon.

Brief History of Brazil

Brazil is still a relatively new country, it was discovered in 1500 by Portuguese sailor and navigator Pedro Alvares Cabral and since then, various export cycles have dominated Brazil’s economic development. The first of these cycles was based on the exportation of brazilwood, used to make dyes and paints. During the 17th century, Brazil became the world’s largest producer of sugar. In this period, a large number of African slaves were brought to Brazil to work in the sugar cane plantations. Gold and diamonds eventually replaced sugar as the country’s major export product.

The People of Brazil

Brazil’s inhabitants are descendants of a mixture of people from different countries and cultures. Portuguese colonizers mixed with the native Indians and African slaves to create the modern day coffee colored Brazilian that we are all familiar with today. Dutch and French colonization also took place in the Northeast and in the 19th century, waves of German, Italian, Polish and Japanese immigrants fled to Brazil to escape the war. Brazilians are perhaps one of the most racially mixed peoples in the world and because of this they are also the most beautiful.

2010 Carnival in Brazil

Last weekend was Carnival in Brazil and like always, it was an amazing event with everybody celebrating.

The modern Brazilian flag was officially adopted on November the 19th in 1889 and the current 27 star version, which we are all familiar with today,was adopted on May 12, 1992.
